Chairladders
I synthesized my passion and long history of making ladders with a functional motif of a chair which I call Chairladders.
the gathering
This experimental piece is a gathering of 21 individual chairladders of different sizes, heights, and woods. I installed each one to evoke a conversation with its neighbors, and as an overall group. Although silent, there is a dialogue within the negative space that is created amongst them.
Me, Myself, and I
Standing tall and yearning for even more height, this precarious Chairladder grants a resting spot one third of the way for the pending climb upward, to reach a new safe place from the world of growing danger below.
deacon
Deacon is a Chairladder that is reaching and searching for a better world. Skinny, precarious, and scared, it balances on a block that is a perched above a few steps. A resting spot, a place to leap from. Deacon is neoteric as it is pushing towards a new source of uncertainty and possibility.
The Story
Two Chairladders stand side by side and are poised to contemplate conversation. They are related from birth. The dark grey spot that appears in each “seat” is because the smaller one was carved from the negative space of the larger. Their base offers a ledge in hopes they might be stacked.
